Story About All Texas Roadtrip

10/21/2009 (Archived from old website)

This is just something I thought everyone should know about our club.

On Saturday, October 17th, about 10 of us were “caravan-ing” back from Waco down highway 6. We stopped in Calvert, Texas for a quick break and for some of us to get fuel. For those who don’t know, Calvert is a quiet little town about 100 miles north of Houston. When we pulled back out on the road, we had to drive through some rocks and gravel that littered the entrance to the gas station. About a mile down the road, my TPM light came on, and started flashing at me. Just great!

We ALL pulled back into the next gas station about 7 miles down the road. Now when I say ALL, I mean everyone in the caravan. Everyone jumped out of their cars and we started looking at what was wrong. Well, it appeared that I must have picked up a sharp rock or piece of metal and it cut down my left rear tire. Not a big deal for most, but I was beside myself. I had just picked up new rims and tires no more than 18 hours before! And now, one of the tires was shot! So much for trying to look cool rolling on three shiny new 22’s and a compact spare! Ha!

I just wanted to make sure that everyone knew what kind of people we have in the club. Everyone helped get the tire changed and everyone made sure everything else was OK with my car. The best part of the whole story is this. Johnny Bee and Fred (AWD Charger) knew that I wouldn’t be able to run at speed, so they stayed back and rolled all the way home with me at 50mph. It was a great display of leadership, friendship, and overall care and concern for the members of our club. My sincerest thanks to Johnny Bee and Fred for their help and sacrifice. It is people like this that make SpaceCityLX a phenomenal group to be a part of.

I just wanted to say a big thanks from my wife and I to the few members of the SCLX guys we met at the Dodge Viper day, up at the Texas Speedway track.  We were a little nervous at throwing ourselves into a car club meeting, having only been in Texas for 2 weeks and owning a Dodge Challenger for a little over half that time.  However it soon became clear that we were more than welcome into the SCLX fold and people were enjoying our enthusiasm at being in this brilliant state.

We had a brief meet up on route where we first met Johnny Bee and his subtle Super Bee Challenger, Kim and Mike in the other Challenger, and Ray and Brandie in their menacing looking 300 SRT8.

We had no idea where we were going or what the Viper day would be about, but after meeting with Harold at the track we quickly realised that was going to be an amazing day of motor sport, car enthusiasts and whole day of meeting enthusiastic and very friendly people.  We belonged to some car clubs in the UK and always amazed me how some people would judge people on the car they drove, not talk to you if your car wasn't a certain type or model and generally be very unfriendly unless you were accepted in their particular circle.   Here.....nothing of that happens...the Viper owners were as happy to see our collection as they were to discuss Vipers, Corvettes, Porsches or Acuras....and the BBQ efforts by Harold and his wife were well recieved too!

Being able to take our cars on the track was a real priveledge.....I've never seen a banked race circuit before in my life!  There is one in the UK, the famous Brooklands Banked Circuit where many famous drivers lost there life pushing race cars of the 50's and 60's.  So be be able to drive our road cars on a former NASCAR circuit was amazing.  Harold kept us all well under control in his Dodge pace truck however, but it was still very cool!

Being typical Brits, we didn't come well prepared, will limited bottles of warm water, no hats, no sun cream etc.....but we thoroughly enjoyed our day with the SCLX guys and their friends.  So a huge thank you to you all and we can't wait to be involved in the future events.  Keep up the excellent work.
